New Contest Invites Maui Students to Bring CRB Awareness Song to Life
Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle (CRB) are a serious agricultural pest in Hawai’i. While CRB are not known to be present in Maui County, CRB detections are on the rise statewide. Awareness is critical to preventing their establishment.
Maui Invasive Species Committee (MISC) invites students to share their knowledge and express their creativity through a CRB Music Video Contest. This year students in Maui County who attend public, private, charter or who are home-schooled can create an original music video for the song ” The Flying Coconut Rhinoceros (The CRB Song) ” that highlights the song lyrics and the contest theme: “CRB Can Really Be a Problem!”

Rules and Guidelines
Eligibility
- Participants must be in grade three or higher
- Open to all public, private, charter and home-school students in Maui County
Entries
- Video must be original and have “CRB,” “Coconut Rhinoceros Beetle,” or the contest theme in the header/title.
- Entries must include factually accurate and clearly understood information about the threat of CRB to the Hawaiian Islands.
- One entry per class or group.
- Audio: All videos will interpret the original song lyrics “The Flying Coconut Rhinoceros (The CRB Song)” Students may use the .mp3 file provided OR use student voices singing/rapping or otherwise featuring the contest song lyrics. Entries using any other song or lyrics will be disqualified.
- Video must be the original artwork of the student(s).
- Video file types may be .mov or .mp4.
- Video credit at the end of the video may include student names, the class/group and school name but WILL NOT identify individual students by name.
- Video must cite any audio, photographic or video materials included as part of the submission. Entries must be accompanied by the official entry form submitted by email to miscpr@hawaii.edu or uploaded into this Google Drive folder

Please complete and return this entry form and this release form (if applicable) with your video. Forms can be found online at mauiinvasive.org
Submission
Contest entry deadline is on Friday, April 17, 2026 by 4:30 PM. Please use the original song “The Flying Coconut Rhinoceros (The CRB Song)” or the entry will be disqualified.
File name should follow this naming convention: SCHOOL/GRADE_CRBvideo (example: POMAIKAI/4-5_CRBvideo)
Entries can be submitted:
By Email: Entries may be in .mp4 or .mov file type and submitted by email to miscpr@hawaii.edu
By Google Drive file drop: Entries may be dropped into this Google Drive folder
Alternatively, you may submit your video by mailing a USB drive to MISC/CRB Video ℅ 90 River Rd. Wailuku, HI 96793
Judging:
Videos will be judged based on creativity in interpreting the contest theme, accuracy and clarity of information, originality and adherence to guidelines. A panel of four judges will be made up of media teachers, conservation biologists and invasive species specialists.
Timeline:
- Entries will be accepted through Friday, April 17th, 2026 by 4:30 PM
- Contest winners will be notified via email by Friday, April 24th, 2026
Prize:
The winning video (determined by highest point value from the judging panel) will receive a 90-minute bouldering session at Aloha Rock Gym in Kahului with coach transportation and lunch provided. The excursion will take place during school hours on Tuesday, May 19, 2026. In the event that the winning class/group can not make that date, the second place winner will be awarded the prize. (Note: maximum group size, including 5:1 chaperones, is 35 persons. Waiver forms will be required for all participants).
- The entries receiving first, second and third highest point values will be featured on the websites for Maui and Molokai Invasive Species Committees.
- All winners will receive a Certificate of Recognition from the Maui Invasive Species Committee and Maui County CRB Working Group
