Early Detection

Finding an invasive species early is one of the most important steps we can take to protect Maui County from the impacts of high threat invasive specie. With that in mind, the Maui Invasive Species Committee has a proactive approach to weed control.

Our early detection team of Forest and Kim Starr, focus on finding those species of plants which are just now being introduced to the state and refer the plants to the Maui Invasive Species Committee to be considered for eradication or control. There efforts are focused on road-side and nursery surveys, enabling us to identify threats before they become widespread and out of control. Adding early detection to our toolbox is an important step towards preventing new and destructive invasive species from becoming established on Maui.

Hawaii Early Detection Network

The Hawaii Early Detection Network was created to increase public awareness of invasive species and engage communities in the monitoring of their own neighborhoods. Find out how you can help protect Maui by participating in the Eyes and Ears Team and attending an educational workshop.
